PRIME
“Why have you not been writing recently Mark?”
“Been busy.”
“Answer in a complete sentence, please,” said Miss Brodie.
“I have been busy starting a poetry publishing press with my friend Alice, “ replied Mark.
“Alice Keeling from the Girls School? Alice Keeling who rides that old bicycle without brakes? She’s nothing but a distraction that girl. If only you would listen to me I would make of you the crème de la crème.”
Miss Brodie, head up, like Sybil Thorndike, her nose arched and proud, continued to sweep ahead up Middle Meadow Walk towards the Old Town which none of the boys had properly seen before. Mark stared at the autumn leaves swirling about in her wake. Miss Brodie was in her prime although what that meant he didn’t know.
The days passed and the wind blew from the Forth. 🌀
